Use this February checklist to reconcile January sales, review nexus, prepare filings, handle notices, and keep exemption certificates current.

February is short, but sales tax obligations still need to be reconciled, filed, and documented on time. Use this monthly checklist to keep ecommerce and SaaS compliance moving.

## Week of February 3–7

### Reconcile January sales

Pull January transaction reports from Shopify, Stripe, or the platforms that process your sales. Compare the tax collected with what is owed by state and flag discrepancies before filing week.

### Review nexus status

Check whether January activity created economic nexus in a new state. Thresholds change, so confirm the current rule and register before filing when a new obligation exists.

## Week of February 10–14

### Prepare monthly returns

Monthly returns are often due around February 20, but the assigned deadline varies. Gather state portal credentials, verify that collected tax is available for remittance, and include local jurisdictions.

### Handle state notices

Review nexus questionnaires, compliance letters, registration notices, and other correspondence received in January. Respond promptly and retain copies of submissions.

## Week of February 17–21

### File monthly returns

Submit each return and payment by the assigned deadline. Save confirmation numbers and copies of the filed returns. If a state requires a zero return, file it even when the marketplace or store collected no tax for the period.

### Review exemption certificates

For B2B SaaS and ecommerce sales, confirm that customer exemption certificates are complete, valid, and current. An expired certificate may mean the seller should have collected tax.

## Week of February 24–28

### Prepare for first-quarter filings

Quarterly filers may have returns due in April. Organize Q1 transaction data now so the filing does not require a last-minute reconstruction.

### Audit your process

Measure how much time the team spent on nexus monitoring, reconciliation, certificates, filing preparation, and notices. Repetitive work that consumes several days each month may be a candidate for automation.

## Automate the recurring work

Businesses filing in many states can spend days each month on manual compliance. Automation can connect sales channels, monitor nexus, calculate tax, manage registrations and certificates, and support filing.

Kintsugi helps teams keep sales tax compliance organized so they can spend less time switching between state portals and spreadsheets.
