Review May 2026 sales-tax changes in Alabama, South Carolina, and Missouri, and learn how to stay current as jurisdictions change.

Organizations can put sales-tax compliance on autopilot and assume the filing landscape will remain unchanged. State and local jurisdictions update sales-tax regulations at unpredictable times, so businesses need a process for monitoring changes.

This update is historical information for May 2026. Rates, effective dates, and exemptions can change; verify current requirements with the relevant tax authority.

## Alabama

Alabama launched a temporary exemption for certain grocery items through June 30, 2026. The change suspends the state sales/use-tax rate on SNAP-eligible food items while the exemption lasts. Local city and county taxes may still apply.

## South Carolina

In Williamsburg County, a new local Capital Projects Tax added 1%, increasing the combined rate from 7% to 8%. Unprepared SNAP-eligible food is exempt.

In Aiken County, an expiring 1% Capital Projects Tax was reimposed immediately upon expiration, keeping the combined rate at 8%.

## Missouri

Missouri introduced a county tax in Maries County and nine overlay jurisdictions, adding a 1% county emergency-services sales tax across the covered ambulance districts and communities.

In the City of St. Louis, the Southtown TDD repealed its 1% TDD sales tax, changing the rate within the Southtown TDD boundary from 10.6790% to 9.6790%.
