Until now, getting an API key meant asking our support team for one. As of today, Premium Plan customers can create, track and deactivate their own API keys from the app.
If you're on the Premium Plan, it's available now. If you're weighing an upgrade because you want to build on the API, this is one less thing standing between you and a working integration.
What you can do
Create a key when you need one. Generate API keys directly in the app. You no longer need to write to support and wait for a reply before an integration can be built or tested.
Turn a key off immediately. If a key is no longer used, or you suspect it has leaked, deactivate it and access stops. There's no request to file and nobody to wait on.
See every key in one list. Your organization's keys are shown together, marked as active, expired or deactivated, so you can tell at a glance which integrations are still live and which keys can be retired.
Why it matters
The two things people ask for most with API keys are speed and control. Creating a key yourself removes the wait. Being able to revoke one the moment you need to means a lost laptop or a departed contractor doesn't turn into an open door to your tax data.

Next on the list are key permissions, so a key can be limited to what a given integration needs, and usage analytics, so you can see which keys are actually being called.
