Avalara Alternatives: 7 Options Compared (2026)

Avalara alternatives compared: why teams switch, published pricing with per-state math, who each option fits, and how to move from Avalara to Kintsugi.

Avalara Alternatives: 7 Options Compared (2026)

Most teams that search for Avalara alternatives already use Avalara. Their renewal is coming up, or they've added states and the bill has grown with them. This guide covers why companies switch, seven alternatives with published pricing, who each one fits, and what moving off Avalara involves.

Kintsugi publishes this guide. Every competitor figure below comes from that vendor's own public pages or from reputable news coverage, checked on 26 September 2026. Where a vendor doesn't publish a number, we say so instead of estimating one. For the head-to-head view, see Kintsugi vs. Avalara.

Why Kintsugi is the #1 Avalara alternative

Kintsugi replaces Avalara's per-state subscription with per-filing pricing, includes the onboarding and 24/7 live chat that Avalara sells as separate plans, and backs its work with a guarantee Avalara doesn't publish.

  • Pricing you can see. A free plan, then paid plans from $75 per filing or registration. No per-state subscription, no onboarding fees, no transaction fees, and no long-term contract lock-in.
  • The whole workflow in one place. Exposure monitoring, AI product categorisation, registration, filing and remittance, refunds and amendments, deregistration, exemption certificates, and a virtual mailbox for state notices.
  • Support that's included. Onboarding assistance and 24/7 live chat with same-day human responses on Starter; dedicated onboarding and account teams with SLA-backed support on Premium.
  • Backed by the Kintsugi Guarantee. If our calculation or filing error leads to penalties or interest, we pay it.
  • Room to grow. 60+ integrations, 13,000+ US jurisdictions, and Canada, the EU, the UK, and 100+ countries on Premium, with 7,000+ customers.

Why companies look for Avalara alternatives

Kintsugi's answer to each of the reasons below is the same: published per-filing pricing, no per-state subscription, and one platform from monitoring through filing.

What switchers tell us. Customers who switched to Kintsugi from Avalara tell us they dealt with poor support and fees they didn't expect. Kintsugi includes onboarding assistance and 24/7 live chat with same-day human responses on Starter, adds dedicated onboarding and account teams with SLA-backed support on Premium, and charges no onboarding fees.

Faster support is sold separately. Avalara's included Standard Support is online case submission with a 24-hour response time, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Live chat and phone support come with Priority Support (8-hour response), and 24/7 coverage with a 1-hour response comes with Enterprise Support. Avalara lists both as purchased plans, without published prices. Every Kintsugi Starter customer gets 24/7 live chat.

Hands-on implementation is sold separately. Kintsugi includes onboarding assistance on Starter and a dedicated onboarding manager on Premium. Avalara's included Standard Implementation is chat with an implementation agent and online case submission. Guided Implementation, with scheduled calls and configuration review, and Managed Support, where Avalara manages your configuration and tax code mapping, are purchased separately at prices Avalara doesn't publish. Hands-on implementation is not included in the per-state price, so get it in writing in your quote.

Pricing that scales with every state. Avalara's published Core Compliance plan costs $79 per state per month, or $799 per state per year billed annually. The Streamlined Sales Tax version costs $69 per state per month ($699 per state per year). Every state you register in adds another subscription. Kintsugi has no per-state subscription: paid plans start at $75 per filing or registration. For the full plan details, see Avalara pricing in 2026.

Published plans stop at $50M in revenue. Avalara's self-serve plans are only for companies with annual revenue under $50M. Above that, and for VAT or GST, Avalara prices by custom quote. Growing past the threshold, or selling abroad, moves you from a rate card to a negotiation.

Registration is billed separately. Avalara charges $403 per location for sales tax registration, and its licence guidance service starts at $119. Kintsugi registrations start at $75 each.

Integrations built by partners. Avalara lists 1,400+ integrations, but fewer than 80 are built by Avalara; the rest are built and maintained by third-party partners. Kintsugi offers 60+ integrations, including no-code connections to Shopify, Stripe, Chargebee, and BigCommerce.

No published error guarantee. Avalara's returns product page doesn't publish a guarantee covering penalties or interest. Kintsugi's Premium plan includes the Kintsugi Guarantee: if our calculation or filing error leads to penalties or interest, we pay it.

Ownership changes. Vista Equity Partners completed its $8.4 billion acquisition of Avalara in October 2022, taking the company private. In July 2025, Avalara announced it had confidentially filed for a new IPO. If your Avalara renewal is coming up, compare your quote against Kintsugi's published pricing before you sign.

What Avalara costs as you add states

Kintsugi charges per filing or registration, so adding a state adds only the returns you file there. These are starting prices from each company's published pricing for a business registering and filing in 10 states:

Avalara Core ComplianceKintsugi
Subscription$9,480/yr billed monthly (10 × $79 × 12), or $7,990/yr billed annually (10 × $799)None; you pay per filing
Registering in 10 states$4,030 (10 × $403)From $750 (10 × $75)
FilingIncluded in the per-state priceFrom $3,000/yr for 40 quarterly returns, or $9,000/yr for 120 monthly returns
Year one$12,020 on annual billingFrom $3,750 (quarterly filer) or $9,750 (monthly filer)

Avalara's cost rises by $799 to $948 a year for each added state, plus $403 to register there. The per-state price doesn't include Avalara's Guided Implementation or its Priority and Enterprise Support plans, which are purchased separately, so get implementation in writing in your quote. Kintsugi charges no onboarding fees and has no long-term contract lock-in.

The 7 best Avalara alternatives

1. Kintsugi

Kintsugi is an AI-native sales tax, VAT, and GST platform for growing SaaS and ecommerce companies. It covers exposure monitoring, product classification, registration, filing and remittance, exemption certificates, and state notices in one place.

  • Pricing: A free plan includes global exposure monitoring, historical liability auditing, nexus threshold alerts, AI product categorisation, and address validation. Starter begins at $75 per filing or registration and adds automated registrations, filings, remittance, refunds and amendments, deregistration, and a virtual mailbox for state notices. Premium is custom, with volume discounts. See pricing.
  • Coverage: US sales tax, plus Canada, the EU, the UK, and 100+ countries on Premium. Kintsugi covers 13,000+ US jurisdictions.
  • Integrations: 60+, including Shopify, Stripe, Chargebee, and BigCommerce, with invoice-level calculation for QuickBooks, NetSuite, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 on Premium.
  • Support: Onboarding assistance on Starter, 24/7 live chat with same-day human responses, and a dedicated onboarding and account team on Premium.

Best for: SaaS and ecommerce companies that want predictable pricing without a per-state subscription, and one platform for monitoring, registration, filing, and notices.

2. Vertex

Watch for: Vertex doesn't publish pricing, so you'll need a quote to compare cost.

Vertex O Series is an enterprise indirect tax engine. It covers sales, use, and VAT rules for 19,000 jurisdictions and can be deployed on-premise, in the cloud, or as a hybrid, with integrations for SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Workday, NetSuite, and Shopify.

Best for: Large enterprises with an in-house tax team and several ERP systems, buying on a quote without published pricing.

Disclosure: Vertex is a minority investor in Kintsugi and a commercial partner. Kintsugi, powered by Vertex, pairs Vertex's O Series engine with Kintsugi's automation.

3. Anrok

Watch for: Anrok bills each state or country as a separate market at $100 a month on Starter, so 10 markets cost $12,000 a year. High-volume Starter customers may pay additional fees to cover third-party costs. Anrok doesn't publish an error guarantee.

Anrok is built for SaaS companies. Plans include global exposure monitoring, real-time calculation, filing and remittance, exemption certificates, and its Anrok Atlas AI assistant. Anrok covers 150+ countries, and the EU One Stop Shop counts as a single market.

Best for: SaaS companies in a handful of markets that can absorb $100 per market, per month, with no published error guarantee.

4. Numeral

Watch for: Registration costs $150 per state, twice Kintsugi's starting price. Global VAT and GST and the tax engine API sit on the custom Enterprise plan. Numeral's guarantee covers late filings only.

Numeral sells filing and registration as a service. Monitoring is free, and Professional costs $75 per filing plus $150 per registration, with autofile, a virtual mailbox, product classification, and exemption certificate management. It lists 40+ integrations.

Best for: US-focused sellers that can pay $150 per registration and don't need global coverage outside an Enterprise contract or a guarantee beyond late filings.

5. TaxJar

Watch for: TaxJar covers US sales tax only. Its published prices are for up to 200 orders a month, and each plan includes only two or four AutoFile filings a year before extra filings cost $50 to $55 each. The economic nexus dashboard and phone support are on the $99 Professional plan only. Its accuracy guarantee is capped at 2x what you paid TaxJar over the prior 12 months. TaxJar's Starter plan has doubled from $19 to $39 a month since early 2025, and TaxJar no longer supports new NetSuite integrations.

TaxJar, owned by Stripe since 2021, offers real-time calculation, reporting, and AutoFile for online sellers on Shopify, Amazon, and WooCommerce.

Best for: US-only ecommerce sellers under 200 orders a month that file in only a few states and handle their own registrations.

6. Zamp

Watch for: Zamp doesn't publish prices for its paid plans, and its free plan is a one-time nexus analysis rather than ongoing monitoring. Coverage is the US, with Canada on its U.S. + Canada plan. For API customers, the Zamp Commitment is capped at the fees paid over the prior 12 months.

Zamp is a managed sales tax service that pairs software with tax experts for registrations, filing, remittance, and notices.

Best for: US and Canadian sellers willing to buy on a quote with no published prices and no coverage beyond North America.

7. Stripe Tax

Watch for: Pricing is a percentage of each transaction (0.5% for no-code), so cost grows with revenue. Sales outside Stripe, such as a Shopify store or ERP invoices, aren't covered. Filing is delivered through partners in bundles starting at $90 a month.

Stripe Tax calculates and collects tax inside Stripe Billing, Invoicing, Checkout, and Payments in 100+ countries.

Best for: Businesses that bill only through Stripe and accept a per-transaction fee that grows with revenue, with filing through partners.

How to switch from Avalara to Kintsugi

  1. Start on the free plan. Connect your sales channels with Kintsugi's no-code integrations, or import transactions by CSV. Exposure monitoring and historical liability auditing show where you have nexus today, including states you may have missed.
  2. Review your registrations and contract dates. Your state registrations belong to your business, not to Avalara, so they carry over. Our team reviews your registrations, filing calendar, and Avalara renewal date, and plans the switch around your cancellation window.
  3. Pick a clean handover period. Choose the first filing period Kintsugi will own for each state, so there are no duplicate filings or gaps. Keep Avalara filing everything before that period.
  4. Connect your state accounts. Kintsugi files and remits on your behalf, and its virtual mailbox gathers state notices in one place.
  5. Register where you're newly exposed. New registrations start at $75 each. On Premium, back filing with voluntary disclosure agreement (VDA) options covers past-due exposure.
  6. Turn off Avalara filing for the handed-over states and export your filing history for your records.

Starter includes onboarding assistance, and Premium adds a dedicated onboarding manager.
