Is TaxJar Still Right for You in 2026? What the Stripe Acquisition Changed

Since Stripe bought TaxJar, Starter went from $19 to $39 a month, free AutoFile credits shrank, and new NetSuite and Stripe connections ended.

Is TaxJar Still Right for You in 2026? What the Stripe Acquisition Changed

TaxJar has not been discontinued. It still sells its own plans, and it now sits next to Stripe Tax inside Stripe's product lineup. But the product you buy today is not the one TaxJar customers signed up for before the acquisition. It costs more, includes fewer filings, connects to fewer of the systems growing businesses run on, and puts support behind multi-day email response windows.

Here is what changed, with sources, and why a growing number of TaxJar customers are moving to Kintsugi.

Key Takeaways

  • Starter now starts at $39 a month, up from $19. Professional at 10,000 orders a month went from $849 to $1,999.
  • Fewer free filings. Included AutoFile credits dropped from 4 to 2 a year on Starter and from 12 to 4 on Professional.
  • Extra filings cost more. Each additional AutoFile filing went from $30 to $50 on Starter and from $35 to $55 on Professional.
  • Integrations are closing to new users. TaxJar no longer supports new NetSuite integrations, and its Stripe integration is for existing users only.
  • Support runs on email SLAs. Replies are promised within 2 business days on Starter and 1 on Professional. Phone is a callback you request by email.
  • Kintsugi is the independent alternative: a Free plan, paid plans from $75 per filing or registration, 24/7 live chat with same-day human responses, and 60+ integrations, including Stripe and NetSuite.

What Happened: Stripe Acquired TaxJar

On 27 April 2021, Stripe announced that it was acquiring TaxJar, framing the deal as a way to help businesses running on Stripe with sales tax and make it easier for them to sell internationally.

Today the two products overlap. TaxJar still offers standalone subscriptions, while Stripe Tax is Stripe's native tax product. Stripe's own pricing page lists U.S. sales tax filing "with TaxJar" as part of its Tax Complete tier, so TaxJar also works as filing infrastructure behind Stripe Tax. Before the acquisition, TaxJar was an independent tax vendor. Now it belongs to a payments company with its own tax product to sell.

What Changed Since the Stripe Acquisition

1. Prices Went Up, and Included Filings Went Down

TaxJar's support documentation shows the change directly. Compare the earlier pricing article with the current one, and the earlier AutoFile pricing with the current AutoFile pricing:

BeforeNow
Starter, starting price$19/month$39/month
Professional, 10,000 orders/month$849/month$1,999/month
AutoFile credits included, Starter4 per year2 per year
AutoFile credits included, Professional12 per year4 per year
Each extra AutoFile filing, Starter$30$50
Each extra AutoFile filing, Professional$35$55

The two changes compound. Take a Starter customer filing quarterly in two states, eight filings a year. Before, four were covered by credits and the other four cost $30 each, $120 a year. Now two are covered and the other six cost $50 each, $300 a year, on top of a subscription that doubled.

TaxJar's plans are also priced by order volume, so the bill rises as you sell more, whether or not your tax obligations change.

2. Integrations Are Closing to New Customers

Two integrations that growing businesses depend on are no longer open to new TaxJar users:

Plans also cap integration counts: up to three data import integrations on Starter and ten total on Professional.

3. Support Runs on Email Response Windows

TaxJar's support SLA promises email replies within 2 business days on Starter and 1 business day on Professional. Phone support is Professional-only, and it is a callback you request by email rather than a line you can call. When a notice arrives or a filing is rejected close to a deadline, two business days is a long time to wait.

"Customers who switched to Kintsugi from TaxJar tell us about slower, less helpful support since the acquisition, along with higher prices and integrations they lost," according to Kintsugi's customer team.

4. International Coverage Still Requires a Second Tool

TaxJar's filing product centres on U.S. states. If you plan to collect VAT or GST abroad, you will need another tool alongside it.

Why Businesses Switch to Kintsugi

Kintsugi works across billing systems and commerce platforms instead of centering on one payment processor. Rather than forcing your business to adapt to a payments roadmap, Kintsugi adapts to your stack.

  • Free to start: The Free plan covers global exposure monitoring, AI product categorisation, and address validation. Paid plans start at $75 per filing or registration, so cost tracks your filings, not your order volume.
  • Real support from day one: Starter includes onboarding assistance and 24/7 live chat with same-day human responses. Premium adds dedicated onboarding and SLA-backed support.
  • Integrations that stay open: 60+ integrations, including Stripe, NetSuite, Shopify, WooCommerce, and QuickBooks. On Premium, real-time invoice calculation in NetSuite runs on Kintsugi's tax engine, powered by Vertex.
  • Automation end to end: Nexus monitoring, registration, calculation, filing, and remittance.
  • Global when you are: Tax compliance in 100+ countries and 13,000+ jurisdictions, so you won't need a second tool when you start collecting VAT or GST.
  • Guaranteed: With the Kintsugi Guarantee on Premium, if our calculation or filing error leads to penalties or interest, we pay it.

Conclusion: Is TaxJar Still Right in 2026?

Since the Stripe acquisition, TaxJar costs more, includes fewer filings, has closed its NetSuite and Stripe integrations to new users, and answers support tickets on a one-to-two-business-day clock. If you are growing, adding systems, or registering in more states, each of those changes costs you more.

Kintsugi gives you an independent tax partner with a Free plan, per-filing pricing, 24/7 live chat, and the integrations TaxJar no longer opens to new customers.
