How Canadian sales tax works

Canada has three kinds of sales tax. The federal GST is 5% everywhere. Five provinces fold their own tax into it as a single harmonized sales tax (HST), from 13% in Ontario to 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec charge their own tax on top of the GST, and Alberta and the territories charge the GST alone. The rate follows the province where the buyer receives the goods or services.

The calculator multiplies your amount by the province’s combined rate and rounds the tax to the nearest cent. Rates were last checked in September 2026. For worked examples, see how to calculate GST in Canada, and for registration, filing and each province’s rules, the Canada sales tax guide.
