TaxJar Alternatives: 7 Options Compared (2026)

TaxJar alternatives compared: why sellers switch, published pricing and filing math, who each option fits, and how to move from TaxJar to Kintsugi.

TaxJar Alternatives: 7 Options Compared (2026)

TaxJar is often a company's first sales tax tool. Teams usually start looking for an alternative when they add states, cross into higher order volumes, need registrations handled, or start selling outside the US. This guide covers why sellers switch, seven alternatives with published pricing, who each one fits, and how moving off TaxJar works.

Kintsugi publishes this guide. Every competitor figure comes from that vendor's public pages, checked on 26 September 2026. Where a vendor doesn't publish a number, we say so. For the head-to-head view, see Kintsugi vs. TaxJar. On Shopify? See Kintsugi vs. TaxJar for Shopify.

Why Kintsugi is the #1 TaxJar alternative

Kintsugi covers the US and 100+ countries, registers you in new states, and never prices by order volume, so adding states or orders doesn't move you up a pricing tier.

  • Pricing you can see. A free plan, then paid plans from $75 per filing or registration. No per-state subscription, no onboarding fees, no transaction fees, and no long-term contract lock-in.
  • The whole workflow in one place. Exposure monitoring, AI product categorisation, registration, filing and remittance, refunds and amendments, deregistration, exemption certificates, and a virtual mailbox for state notices.
  • Support that's included. Onboarding assistance and 24/7 live chat with same-day human responses on Starter; dedicated onboarding and account teams with SLA-backed support on Premium.
  • Backed by the Kintsugi Guarantee. If our calculation or filing error leads to penalties or interest, we pay it.
  • Room to grow. 60+ integrations, 13,000+ US jurisdictions, and Canada, the EU, the UK, and 100+ countries on Premium, with 7,000+ customers.

Why sellers look for TaxJar alternatives

Kintsugi covers the whole compliance workflow, from monitoring to registration, filing, and notices, in the US and 100+ countries, with pricing that doesn't depend on order volume. Here's where TaxJar's published plans draw the line.

What switchers tell us. Customers who switched to Kintsugi from TaxJar tell us prices went up, integrations were dropped, and support got worse after the Stripe acquisition. Kintsugi includes onboarding assistance and 24/7 live chat with same-day human responses on Starter.

Prices went up. TaxJar's own help centre listed Starter from $19 a month, with four AutoFile credits a year and extra filings from $30, in early 2025. Today Starter starts at $39 a month with two AutoFile credits and $50 extra filings. Professional still starts at $99 a month, but its included AutoFile credits dropped from 12 to four and extra filings rose from $35 to $55.

Integrations were dropped. TaxJar's help centre says it "does not support new integrations with NetSuite" (last updated 2 May 2025), and its developer docs say its Stripe integrations are "for existing users only." Kintsugi connects to Stripe, and to NetSuite on Premium, with 60+ integrations in total.

US only. TaxJar covers US sales tax. Selling into Canada, the EU, or the UK means adding a second tool. Kintsugi's Premium plan covers Canada, the EU, the UK, and 100+ countries.

Filing credits run out quickly. TaxJar Starter ($39/month) includes two AutoFile filings a year, and Professional ($99/month) includes four. Every filing after that costs $50 on Starter or $55 on Professional. A seller filing quarterly in five states needs 20 filings a year.

Order-volume pricing. TaxJar's published prices cover up to 200 orders a month. Higher volumes move you up its pricing, and flex fees apply in months when you exceed your plan. Kintsugi has no transaction fees and doesn't price by order volume.

Key features sit on the higher plan. The economic nexus dashboard, phone support, audit support, and a customer success manager are on Professional only. Kintsugi's free plan includes nexus monitoring and threshold alerts.

Registration costs extra, and a lot more. TaxJar sells state registration at $299 per state, and only to customers on a paid plan. Kintsugi registers you for $75 per registration, with auto-register where states support it.

A capped guarantee. TaxJar's accuracy guarantee covers up to 2x what you paid TaxJar over the prior 12 months, and its filing guarantee covers late AutoFile filings. The Kintsugi Guarantee, on Premium, covers penalties or interest caused by our calculation or filing errors.

Stripe ownership. Stripe acquired TaxJar in April 2021 and also sells Stripe Tax, its own tax product built into Stripe. TaxJar's price increases and dropped integrations came after the acquisition. Kintsugi connects to Stripe, Shopify, Chargebee, and BigCommerce, with 60+ integrations in total.

What TaxJar costs as you add filings

Kintsugi charges $75 per filing and $75 per registration, billed separately, with no plan fee and no order-volume tiers. TaxJar's cost is a monthly plan, plus $50 or $55 for every filing beyond the included AutoFile credits, plus $299 for each state registration. Here's the first year, when you register in every state you file in, and the years after:

ScenarioKintsugi, first yearTaxJar Starter, first yearTaxJar Professional, first yearOngoing year (Kintsugi / Starter / Professional)
5 states, quarterly (5 registrations, 20 filings)$1,875$2,863$3,563$1,500 / $1,368 / $2,068
10 states, quarterly (10 registrations, 40 filings)$3,750$5,358$6,158$3,000 / $2,368 / $3,168
10 states, monthly (10 registrations, 120 filings)$9,750$9,358$10,558$9,000 / $6,368 / $7,568

How the numbers work: Kintsugi is registrations × $75 plus filings × $75. TaxJar Starter is $39 × 12 = $468 plus $50 for each filing beyond two, and Professional is $99 × 12 = $1,188 plus $55 for each filing beyond four, with $299 per registration added in the first year. TaxJar's prices are monthly list prices; it says annual billing saves 10% or more.

TaxJar's plan prices only hold up to 200 orders a month, and its plan price rises above that. States usually assign monthly filing to sellers with higher tax liability, who are often past 200 orders a month; for them, the TaxJar figures in the last row are a floor. Starter also leaves out the economic nexus dashboard, phone support, and audit support, which are on Professional. Kintsugi's price doesn't change with order volume and covers the US and, on Premium, 100+ countries.

The 7 best TaxJar alternatives

1. Kintsugi

Kintsugi is an AI-native sales tax, VAT, and GST platform for growing SaaS and ecommerce companies.

  • Pricing: A free plan includes exposure monitoring, historical liability auditing, nexus threshold alerts, AI product categorisation, and address validation. Starter begins at $75 per filing or registration and adds automated registrations, filings, remittance, refunds and amendments, deregistration, and a virtual mailbox for state notices. Premium is custom. See pricing.
  • Coverage: US sales tax across 13,000+ jurisdictions, plus Canada, the EU, the UK, and 100+ countries on Premium.
  • Integrations: 60+, including no-code Shopify, Stripe, Chargebee, and BigCommerce connections.
  • Support: Onboarding assistance on Starter and 24/7 live chat with same-day human responses.

Best for: Ecommerce and SaaS sellers that are adding states or countries and want registration, filing, and notices handled in one place.

2. Numeral

Watch for: Registration costs $150 per state, twice Kintsugi's starting price. Global coverage and the tax engine API are on the custom Enterprise plan. Numeral's guarantee covers late filings only.

Numeral offers free monitoring and a Professional plan at $75 per filing plus $150 per registration, with autofile, a virtual mailbox, product classification, and exemption certificates. It lists 40+ integrations.

Best for: US-focused sellers that can pay $150 per registration and don't need global coverage outside an Enterprise contract or a guarantee beyond late filings.

3. Avalara

Watch for: Avalara prices each state separately, from $79 per state per month ($799 per year), and only for companies under $50M in revenue. Registration costs $403 per location. Avalara lists 1,400+ integrations, but fewer than 80 are built by Avalara; the rest are built and maintained by third-party partners. Avalara sells live chat, phone support, and faster responses as separate Priority and Enterprise Support plans, and sells hands-on Guided Implementation separately too.

Avalara's AvaTax calculates sales and use tax, with managed returns and exemptions included in Core Compliance. See our Avalara alternatives guide for the full cost math.

Best for: Companies above $50M in revenue that need several tax types from one vendor and will negotiate a custom quote, per-state pricing, and separately sold implementation and support.

4. Stripe Tax

Watch for: Stripe Tax charges a percentage of each transaction, so cost grows with revenue, and it doesn't cover sales outside Stripe, such as Amazon or a Shopify store. Filing comes through partners in bundles from $90 a month.

Best for: Businesses that bill only through Stripe and accept a per-transaction fee that grows with revenue, with filing through partners.

5. Anrok

Watch for: Every state or country is a separate $100-a-month market on Starter, and high-volume Starter customers may pay extra fees. Anrok doesn't publish an error guarantee.

Anrok is built for SaaS billing, with coverage in 150+ countries and integrations for subscription and ERP systems.

Best for: SaaS companies in a handful of markets that can absorb $100 per market, per month, with no published error guarantee.

6. Zamp

Watch for: Paid plans aren't publicly priced, and the free plan is a one-time analysis. Zamp covers the US, with Canada as an add-on.

Zamp pairs software with tax experts who handle registrations, filings, and notices.

Best for: US and Canadian sellers willing to buy on a quote with no published prices and no coverage beyond North America.

7. TaxCloud

Watch for: TaxCloud is US only, prices its plans by order volume, and adds surcharges for Colorado, Louisiana, and Washington B&O filings. Real-time calculation, ERP integrations, and API access need its Premium plan.

TaxCloud is a Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) certified service provider. In the 24 SST states, eligible sellers can get registration, calculation, filing, and remittance at no cost. Its filing service starts at $39 a month. See our TaxCloud alternatives guide.

Best for: US-only sellers whose obligations sit mostly in SST states and whose order volume stays in a low pricing tier.

How to switch from TaxJar to Kintsugi

  1. Connect your channels on the free plan. Install the Shopify app or connect Stripe, Chargebee, BigCommerce, or another no-code integration, or import transactions by CSV.
  2. Check your exposure. Kintsugi's exposure monitoring and historical liability audit show where you have nexus, including states where you may have crossed a threshold without registering.
  3. Carry over your registrations. Your state registrations stay with your business. Kintsugi registers you in any new states from $75 each.
  4. Choose a handover period. Pick the first period Kintsugi will file for each state, and turn off AutoFile in TaxJar for those states so nothing is filed twice.
  5. Connect state accounts and notices. Kintsugi files and remits, and its virtual mailbox collects state notices.
  6. Export your TaxJar reports for the periods TaxJar filed, and keep them with your records.

Starter includes onboarding assistance. On Premium, back filing with voluntary disclosure agreement (VDA) options can clean up past-due exposure.
