Where our facts come from
We check every rate, threshold, date, form number and rule on our tax pages against the official source: the state department of revenue, California's CDTFA, the statute itself, or the national tax authority for pages outside the US. We use official sources only, and our guides list the sources they rely on.
In September 2026 we fact-checked every one of our sales tax guides against those official sources.
How a page is reviewed
Every page with tax content (US state and territory guides, state and city posts, general explainers, and international guides and posts) is going through a review by a named Kintsugi tax expert, starting with our most-read pages.
- The reviewer opens the page and checks every rate, threshold, date, form number and rule against the official source.
- Anything wrong is recorded with the page, what is wrong, the correct value and a link to the official source, and the page is corrected.
- When the page is correct, the reviewer signs it off with the date of the review.
A signed-off page shows "Reviewed by" with the reviewer's name, credential and the review date, linked to their bio. The sign-off means the facts on the page are correct as of that date, checked against the official source.
Review dates are real
We only show a review date when a real review happened. We never move dates forward in bulk to make pages look fresher. The credentials we show are accurate (CPA, EA, JD, or the reviewer's actual title), and every reviewer approves their bio and photo before it is published.
How often pages are re-reviewed
State guides are re-reviewed every year, and again whenever rates change on the quarterly change dates: January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1.
Corrections
When a review finds an error, we correct the page against the official source before it is signed off. If you think something on one of our pages is wrong, tell us through our support page with the page and the official source, and we will check it against that source and correct the page.
